Prayer Meeting

prayermeeting

I have recently spent three weeks ‘on tour’ with Ross Paterson in New Zealand - it was a stimulating experience for me, and it was also exciting to see his impact on so many lives. Spending time with Ross, I observed firsthand his priorities of prayer and being in God's Word above all else. Our needs, personal and mission-related, will be met if we get the first two in their rightful position. And so I want to share some thoughts here from God's Word.

On tour, one message was often emphasised by Ross, whether in English or Mandarin:

  • That mission is not an option.
  • That it is a Biblical imperative that we are to do at least one, if not all, of the often repeated - pray, give, go, support.
  • That the ‘go’ by definition means to cross cultural boundaries. Helping neighbourhood youth, or travelling overseas to speak to those of the same ethnicity, is important, but it is not ‘mission’.

Reading some extracts recently from ‘Perspectives’ has reminded me that this call to Biblical mission comes with a challenge and a warning. It will not be easy.

In John 20:21 we read: “Again Jesus said: ‘As the Father has sent Me, so I am sending you’.” The newly resurrected Jesus spoke these words to His startled disciples when He miraculously entered the place where they were hiding, through a locked door! The first thing He did was to show them His hands and His sides, bearing the fresh evidence of His ordeal on the cross. He did this to prove who He was and that He had risen from the dead! But He also did it to emphasise the consequences of His Father's decision to send Him.

He came into a world that was largely an empty mission field: “He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him” (John 1:11). Then come the telling words, “So I am sending you.” As Jesus came, so He expects us to go! He is speaking to each of us here in NZ! We are to follow in His footsteps and the road will not be easy. The mission fields of the world may sometimes be lonely and challenging places.

We have noted within CCSM in recent days clear proof of that, as a number of our workers and colleagues are going through inexplicably difficult times. One worker recently wrote: “We are totally lost and baffled as to why this is all happening, when you think it can’t get any worse, it does.” So how are we to view this?

Firstly, as the disciples saw the power of the resurrected Lord - risen from the dead and walking through walls, so too can we walk in that power: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore GO.” Charles Spurgeon speaking on this verse said: “You have a factor here that is absolutely infinite... Some say: ‘I will do as much as I can.’ Any fool can do that. He that believes in Christ does what he cannot do, attempts the impossible and performs it.”

Secondly that which He asked of his disciples He asks also of us. Those who serve in mission not only call on the power of His resurrection but also get to know something of the fellowship of His suffering. What a thrilling prospect.

Murray Cameron

Thank God for Ross and Christine’s visit in March. Pray that the mission seeds they sowed into so many lives will have a notable harvest in due course.

Pray for those in our company who are right now going through difficult times. May they know the awesome power of the One who sent them and travels with them and may they rejoice in the fellowship of His suffering.

Pray that we will all relate to the words of Spurgeon: “He that believes in Christ does what he cannot do, attempts the impossible and performs it.”

Murray Cameron

From Murray Cameron, New Zealand Director

Hi everyone

rossandchristine

Ross and Christine Patersons visit.

Ross and Christine flew out last week after an excellent New Zealand visit.

We spoke at a number of new venues and many new partnerships were formed.

The fundraising dinners in Auckland and Christchurch for our China School of Missions (CSM) were excellent.

The enthusiasm in the churches we visited was amazing. Make no mistake you are part of a vibrant ministry here in NZ. You know something is happening when people will not let you leave their church and buy all of your stock!!

There is a wave of new interest in short term teams. It is now for example “highly likely” we will send a cycle team to south west China later this year – made up of and led by Christchurch youth.

Ross and Christine spoke to several Student Life meetings at Canterbury University – this partnership has been further developed.

Dunedin and Wellington visits

I am going to Dunedin to speak to a Student Life Meeting at Otago University on Wednesday 10th April. I will be in Dunedin for two full days.

I am preaching at a large Chinese church in Wellington on Sunday 26th May.

Both Dunedin and Wellington have been on my wish list for some time. (If you have contacts I can visit in either of these cities please let me know – I need to make the most of my time there.)

Farm Team

Three New Zealand farmers will be in the North East of China as you read this. They are the advance party for this large new CCSM project and will prepare a master plan for the development of the 900 acre farm.
