“Illegal Business Operation”

Posted on 25 July 2009.

Beijing Christian Shi Weihan was sentenced in June to three years in prison and a fine of 150,000 yuan (US$21,975) for "illegal business operation".

Shi had been running a legal Christian bookstore that sold materials obtained with government permission, but he had also been printing Bibles and Christian literature for free distribution to house churches.

Shi was first arrested in November 2007, but was released just over a month later due to insufficient evidence. However, two months later he was taken back into custody and remained there until his trial in June this year. Shi suffers from diabetes and is believed to be in poor health.

Compass Direct reports: "Friends and business acquaintances of Shi have described him as a model citizen of China, saying that he has inspired them to love China by his patriotism and love for his homeland. They said he is known for selfless sacrifice on behalf of poor and disenfranchised rural Christians and minority children."

Shi's wife Zhang Jing and their two daughters, 12-year-old Shi Jia and 8-year-old Shi En Mei, have been under nearly continual surveillance since his arrest. Zhang has taken on leadership duties at their church despite suffering much anxiety and stress. The two daughters have been ostracized at school as children of a prisoner.

Despite government comments to the contrary, the need for Bibles and Christian literature in China remains immense. AM-CCSM is committed to help meet this need. This month a team of couriers is in China delivering such materials to believers in three different cities. Please remember to lift them up in prayer.

Pray for Shi Weihan as he comes to terms with an extended prison term. May he find encouragement in the Lord and continue to shine for Him, even from his prison cell.

Pray for Shi's wife, Zhang Jing, and their two daughters. May they experience the loving support they need during this difficult time and be able to hold fast to the Lord.

Pray for protection for many others in China who are involved in printing and distributing much-needed Christian materials. Remember particularly this month's courier team and ask that all the books they are carrying might be safely delivered into the hands of those who have requested them.
